 Chapter 4 - A Moving Story
Part 2

I have made a decision. On no account are we ever going to move again. Packing all one’s things up and putting them into storage is a truly hideous experience. On the other hand, our loft is immaculate now. I have even made a map of each ‘department’ so I will know exactly where to find everything when we move back to the house next year.

So, after much’ exchanging of views’, Husi decided to hire a Luton truck with the tail lift and do the removal driving himself. The removal team or ‘Men with Ven’ consisted of Mark and Lee who were let off building duties for the day, Husband and my good self,’ wo - man with van’ following in convoy driving the transit, which I have to say, I really enjoyed. I managed to behave in a ladylike manner and not turn into white van man.

We began our odyssey early on Monday morning in Bexhill, van picked up, team arrived and loading up some very large pieces of furniture to be put into storage until the building is finished and ready for me to do the interesting bits. Off we go! Dorking, not too far away, roughly one and a half hours. That is when there are no contraflow lights. Finally, 3 hours later we unloaded all the shop ‘stuff’ and proceeded to continue on to London to pick up the second haul from home.

Loading and re-loading all day long

Driving the van

More traffic! 5pm arrived at the house and now in a real hurry as we had to load up and get back to the storage in Dorking and unload before 9.30pm when they lock down and we would be stuck in the container yard all night. Maneuvering even more large pieces of furniture from a Victorian town house is a skill never to be underestimated. I couldn’t look, as huge and heavy mirrors were removed from walls, our dining room table, too big to go up the stairs from the lower ground to the ground floor, had to be lifted up through the back French windows and other precious pieces of this and that were heaved into the vans.

The dreamiest of dream teams

WE DID MAKE IT BY A HAIRS BREADTH.  Unloaded the vans with minutes to spare. Dark, wet and all of us very very tired and hungry. I’m afraid the vote was the nearest Burger King stop off!

Back to Bexhill and dropped off two very excellent members of the team. Hus and I proceeded to drag ourselves back to St Leonards Road and fell into bed.  Nothing more to say about a very long and wearisome day. THE END
